I joined ASU in 1995 as an environmental engineer and am part of the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering (http://engineering.asu.edu/) ain the recently formed School of Sustainable Engineering and The Built Environment (http://engineering.asu.edu/sebe) at Arizona State University- ASU (http://www.asu.edu ). I have served as the Department Chair and School Director, and now focus on teaching (ASU101, CEE 361, 462, 561, 567 and 598) and research in the area of emerging contaminants and innovative treatment processes for clean water. A full vitae is available (A long RESUME-2012.docx). My research group has over 130 publications and I have an H-index of 34. My current research interests include:
Sources and characterization of natural organic matter (NOM) in natural systems
Formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during water treatment
Detection and exposure assessment to engineered NANOMATERIALS in the environment
Innovative treatment processes using nanotechnology
Removal of arsenic and metals from drinking water
Control and treatment of alga-derived taste and odors (T&O) in potable water supplies
Indirect reuse of treated wastewater
Recharge of aquifers with surface water
Use of photosynthetic microalga for controlling green house gases (CO2)
Management and treatment of nitrate (NO3-) in drinking water supplies
My research is heavily weighted towards water issues in Arizona. However, the results are of significance to other portions of the US and arid-regions throughout the world. This research leads to a number of multidisciplinary research activities with biologists, botanists, chemists, and geologists. Recently completed and ongoing projects can be viewed for project summaries. Below are some links to multidisciplinary centers that I interact with:
NSF sponsored Central Arizona Project Long-Term Ecological Research ( http://caplter.asu.edu/ )
NSF sponsored Decision Center for Desert Cities
Undergraduate and graduate (master and Ph.D.) students and post-doctoral researchers are involved in funded research from local and national agencies (see research interests). Pictures and information of my current research group are available.
I am married to Kelly and have a daughter and twin sons.
I love the outdoors and fly-fishing.
